Scent vs Fragrance: Understanding the Language of Perfumes

In English, Both “scent comparison” and “fragrance comparison” are correct and can be used when talking about perfumes. The words “scent” and “fragrance” are often used interchangeably in this context.

However, “fragrance” is more commonly used in the perfume industry, so “fragrance comparison” might be more appropriate if you’re writing for a perfume-focused audience.

Also, you can use both “fragrance” and “scent” when talking about perfume with your friends. Both terms are commonly used and understood in casual conversation. “Fragrance” is often used to refer to a pleasant smell, especially from a perfume, while “scent” can refer to any kind of smell. So, if you’re discussing the pleasant aroma of a perfume, either term would be appropriate and natural to use.

In Korean,  In Korean, the connotation changes when you use the words “향기 비교” (fragrance comparison) and “냄새 비교” (smell comparison). When you want to talk or write about perfume, it’s more natural to use the term “향기 비교” (fragrance comparison). This is because “냄새” (smell) can give the impression of a bad odor.

When talking about the scent of a perfume, we use the word ‘향’. For example, you can say “이 향수의 향이 좋아요” (This perfume smells good) or “이 향수의 향이 강렬해요” (This perfume has a strong scent). In other contexts, words like ‘냄새’ (smell) and ‘향기’ (aroma) can also be used.

Tip - The word “냄새” can have a negative connotation, so when eating Korean food, saying that the food has a good  ‘향’   can create a much better atmosphere.
